Concerto Köln partners with HfMT Cologne
We are excited to launch a new cooperation with the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. On 15 September 2025, Prof. Tilmann Claus, Rector of the university, and we, represented by Stefan Gawlick, Managing Director of Concerto Köln, officially signed the partnership.
Through this collaboration, we aim to bring artistic practice, musicology, and education closer together, fostering new ideas for historically informed performance. The project was initiated by our Artistic Director Hannah Freienstein, Prof. Leonard Schelb, Head of the Early Music Institute at HfMT Cologne, and Dr. Kai Hinrich Müller, a musicologist who has worked with us extensively.
As part of the partnership, we will offer workshops and project days with our musicians, giving students hands-on insight into our rehearsal and performance processes. In addition, research projects will be actively integrated, creating a space for shared learning, experimentation, and dialogue between students and ensemble.
#WeCelebrate
Concerto Köln will be marking its 40th anniversary in 2025 - and we're not just celebrating on one day, but for an entire decade!
With #WeCelebrate, we are dedicating ourselves to an outstanding composer or a significant historical event every year until the 50th anniversary. The aim is to make music not only audible, but also tangible - with all its social, artistic and human facets.
Alessandro Scarlatti will kick things off in 2025.
The Wagner Cycles
Under the overall artistic direction of Kent Nagano and Jan Vogler, Richard Wagner's ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’ will be reworked as part of a multi-year project of the Dresden Music Festival ‘The Wagner Cycles’ from 2023 to 2026 - in the artistic context of its time of origin, based on the latest findings of Wagner and performance practice research, linked to a new Richard Wagner Academy in Dresden.
‘Siegfried’ will premiere at the Prague State Opera on 1 April 2025, with further performances on 4 April at the Philharmonie de Paris10. April at the Cologne Philharmonie, 15 June at the Dresden Music Festival and 12 September at the Lucerne Festival.
