Beauty of the European Baroque
From the dramatic intensity of Paolo Scalabrini’s Sinfonia in G minor – long attributed to Hasse – to the cheerful, expansive soundscapes of Corelli’s Christmas Concerto, this programme traces the many facets of the European Baroque. Italian brilliance and theatrical gestures meet the contrapuntal clarity of Bach, the refined virtuosity of Giuseppe Sammartini and Telemann, and Charles Avison’s unmistakablefurther development of the Italian concert style.
The focus is on the ‘Pastorale’: not merely an image of Christmas, but a musical language of liminal states, simplicity and light.
