A thorough clear-out always reveals a new home. This is also the case with Vivaldi’s ‘Four Seasons’ by Concerto Köln. The award-winning Baroque orchestra has taken on this timeless classic and discarded all rigidity from the outset: freedom is the overriding principle. And so, whilst following the score, they play, experiment and improvise in such a way that, although the original is easily recognisable, one is constantly confronted with an approach that was commonplace in Vivaldi’s day: The score serves merely as a basis, a framework, which the musicians enrich with imagination and a passion for creative expression.
